The "O Antiphons" of Advent

Posted by Be Holy on December 19, 2015
Posted in: Uncategorized. Tagged: Advent, “O” Antiphons, Catholic, Chrisian, Christ, Church, Come Lord Jesus!, divine, fulfillment, messiah. Leave a comment

The Roman Church has been singing the “O” Antiphons since at least the eighth century. They are the antiphons that accompany the Magnificat canticle of Evening Prayer from December 17-23. They are a magnificent theology that uses ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but present ones as well. Their repeated use of the imperative “Come!” embodies the longing of all for the Divine Messiah.

come to save us without delay!

Prepare Ye!

Cover your eyes,
Lest you look on evil.
Stop your ears
Lest the fowl word assail.

The unthinkable
Has come to pass.
The forbidden
Have come to be.

The very air carries
The Tempter’s brood,
Sinister, in cloaked deceit.
Evil snakes in high places,
Surreptitious, in plans and plottings.

Look, and you will not see
The Perpetrator.
Sound the alarm,
But to meet mock outrage,
And the blind eye.

The pot once simmering
Has come to a boil,
No lid to contain,
No effort to constrain.

Prepare ye!
Prepare Ye!
With prayer,
And fasting,
Prepare ye!

From the Four Corners
Trumpet blasts,
Herald of battle,
A call to arms.

Arrows, tipped with prayer,
Fly heavenward,
Rising to hail the Almighty,
To bid bright Michael
To storm.

Let them descend as rain
To pierce the heart of Darkness
To rout the Foe
On the Terrible Day,
The Day of the Lord.

Mercy opens His Breast,
Revealing a Heart of Love.
Justice clothes the anawim
In plated armor.

Light from light
Fills the Earth
As Pentecost,
And Genesis meet.

A New Heaven
And New Earth to come,
As the King of All Nations
Arises in the East,
Prepared to mount His throne.

Prepare ye!
Prepare Ye!
With prayer,
And fasting,
Prepare ye!

So, she’s got “race” a bit mixed up with “nationality”, the rest is right on according to the Qur’an, the Hadith, and the Sira.

I Love Waking Up

I love waking up
In the Heart of Jesus.
Before my eyes even open
I feel You all about me.
You are looking at Me
As Mary looked on You
In slumber serene.

I am stirring.
You are smiling Your “Good morning”
I see You are not alone
I blow my heartfelt kisses
To Your happy entourage.
Heavenly family, you, too,
Welcome me to New Day.

Yes, Sweet Jesus, I am ready.
You’ve watched over me in sleep;
Now, again, I pick up my cross.
Walk the hours of today,
As Light upon my way.

Winston Churchill’s Way With Words

Posted by Be Holy on December 13, 2015
Posted in: Uncategorized. Tagged: America, Kennedy, leadership., nation, speech, Winston Churchill, words. Leave a comment

We have a president who loves to make speeches, but there is a gap spanning the space between his oratory and his heart.  After almost sever years and words ad nauseum, who can believe a word he utters?

Our present age, challenged by specters few understand cries out for a leader to rally this nation’s greatness and unify us under a banner, red, white and blue with a spangle of stars to eclipse the cultural diversity at whose altar so many worship. We used to be a melting pot, but now inflamed fractions of competing cultures, persuaded that their slice of the American pie  is somehow owed to them, no longer grateful, are envious, suspicious and, most of all, impatient.

Who can lead us out of this enveloping darkness. Where is the man with more than hollow words and empty heart? I long for a Churchill.  President John F. Kennedy, himself a man with a message for our nation and his time, said of Winston Churchill:

“In the dark days and darker nights when England stood alone — and most men save Englishmen despaired of England’s life — he mobilized the English language and sent it into battle.”

This podcast will throw a little light on the making of such a man.
